Choose Ledger for the jobs it actually covers.
Ledger is a shared customer, quoting, invoicing and scheduling workspace for service businesses. Choosing an industry changes relevant terminology and setup prompts. It does not install a specialist system for that industry.
Try the web app with your own representative records. Customer records, reviewed quotes and invoices, portals and bookings are shared business tools; Pro adds crew tools and price-list quoting. Connected services need setup. A product demo is not proof of payment settlement, carrier delivery or suitability for every specialist workflow. Kyle Maclean, the founder and owner of KMJ Tire in Calgary, can help you check the fit.
Business-fit guide
“Shared workflow” below means customer → service/price → appointment → quote/invoice. It does not mean every task in that industry is supported.
| Business | Shared workflow | Set up and check | Still needs specialist tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trades & field service | Customer/job notes, product prices, quotes, appointments, invoices. Pro adds crew dispatch and timecards. | Service duration and prices, staff skills/hours, taxes, customer contact details. Verify the actual job before moving from your current system. | Equipment asset histories, multi-stage projects, permitting, inspection certificates and regulated records. |
| Salons & appointment services | Customer contact notes, a service menu, quotes and invoices. | Review service duration, staff/resource availability, capacity and time off. Confirm the actual staff and resource availability before accepting a booking. | Colour/formula histories, complex multi-stage processing, packages/memberships and specialist point of sale. |
| Pet services | Owner contacts, preserved extra fields/notes, service prices, quotes, appointments and invoices. | Keep the owner as the customer; review pet details after import and duration/capacity before booking. | Structured multi-pet profiles, vaccination tracking, kennel occupancy and clinical animal records. |
| Automotive service | Customer/vehicle records, service and tire pricing, appointments, invoices and portals. | Confirm vehicle links, source dates and tax/fee treatment. Uploaded prices and recorded stock are not an automatic live supplier feed. | A full shop-management replacement, repair estimating databases, parts procurement or diagnostic systems. |
| Clinical, legal or other regulated practices | Evaluate only generic contact and billing needs. | Establish your actual records, consent, access and retention requirements before choosing any system. | Ledger does not claim to provide clinical charts, regulated case management, specialist consent or compliance certification. |
What a file import means
- Choose customers, products/inventory or a service menu. Preview the destination, worksheet, columns and exceptions before saving.
- Use one table with a header row. Excel, CSV and tab-separated formats are supported within the size and row limits shown by the app. This is not a promise that every spreadsheet layout will work.
- Customer extra columns are preserved as notes and original fields, not automatically turned into specialist records. Service imports require reviewed prices; bookable services also need valid durations.
- A range or bundle such as “10–20” or “2 for $10” is not a settled unit price. Resolve flagged values before using them in a quote.
- Download original imports and catalog history. Eligible customer-only imports can be undone if later edits or linked records would not be lost. A business archive is not a one-click whole-business restore.
Before the first real job
- Set your business details, time zone and hours.
- Import a small representative file and check the actual saved contacts, notes and prices.
- Review service duration, taxable/exempt treatment and any staff/resource constraints.
- Review tax registration and rates explicitly. A location is not proof that your business should charge a particular tax.
- Create a reviewed appointment and invoice for a real intended job. Check every line and recipient before confirming or sending.
- Test your connected providers separately. A saved payment record does not prove funds settled; an accepted text does not prove delivery.
Trial, plans and connections
The 14-day software trial starts without a card. Eligible new businesses receive one shared US$20 AI onboarding credit after verification; it lasts for the original trial and does not refresh monthly. See the trial-credit terms. A scripted phone walkthrough demonstrates the conversation without placing calls, sending texts or booking appointments. Live calling and texting require a paid subscription, an available number and provider activation; Front Desk requires Pro. Activation timing depends on number availability and carrier checks. Front Desk handles customer texts and voicemail follow-up by text; live voice answering is not promised.
Customer portals are free. Pro includes worker links without per-worker fees. Extra owner-level logins on Pro cost $299/month each. See the current plan details for prices and usage allowances. QuickBooks, Google and payment providers have their own setup and availability requirements.
